There is a prevailing myth that all pharmacies are created equal. Our pharmacy team at WellPower is here to bust that myth and show how we value people over profits (which is why we don’t sell food. Or party supplies.) Check out what sets WellPower apart and learn how we advocate for the people we serve over the bottom line.

Nonprofit Pharmacy vs Retail Pharmacy: What’s the Difference?
In the ongoing struggle between retail pharmacies and smaller nonprofits, we’re ready to show you why and how WellPower will always put you first, instead of only prioritizing your dollar.
Round 1: Pharmacy Services
We all know that the primary job of a pharmacy is to fill prescriptions.
But what about other services? At WellPower, we offer a range of options for people (both those receiving mental health care services with us and other community members) including education and consultation about diabetes management, a full-service travel clinicfor people going abroad, tobacco cessation support, vaccines (both seasonal and year-round) and on-site pharmacists who are ready to support with consultations about medications.
Our goal at WellPower’s pharmacies isn’t to rush you out the door or make you spend more money, but to help you understand your healthcare needs and support you with both prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Round 2: People Over Profits
When is the last time you heard of a pharmacy trying to save people money or staff going to bat against insurance to negotiate a lower price for medications? What about delivering medications to their customers at no additional cost?
WellPower’s pharmacy does all of that.
As a nonprofit, we’re not trying to raise prices, inflate costs or sell you something you don’t need. We’re here for you, and that means putting people before profit.
“Someone can come to our pharmacy and we’ll go out of our way to help them in a way that is meaningful for them,” said Marilyn Siayap, director of pharmacy services at WellPower. “They will walk away with everything we can provide for them.”
What do community members who actually use our pharmacies have to say?
- “This review is about Andrea and the pharmacy. Andrea saved me almost 30 dollars on my meds because she took the time to investigate the price in my insurance.…she’s always there for me.” – Zoey
- “I have received excellent service getting my prescriptions at this pharmacy and staff are exceptionally helpful.” – Lizbeth
- ”This place works very hard to meet my needs. Staff is capable and has a good sense of humor. Best pharmacy I’ve ever worked with.” – Tony

Round 3: Pharmacy Wait Times
Picture this: you’re finishing up at your healthcare appointment and you need a medication refill. You use a retail pharmacy, so your doctor calls in the medication, but they have to leave a voicemail. And now, you wait. A day goes by. And now you’re needing your refill by tomorrow. So you call and ask if it can be ready sooner. The tech on the other end of the phone is apologetic, but they’re out of your medication at that location and need to wait for it to be delivered from another store. So you wait some more…
Meanwhile, your friend uses WellPower’s pharmacy. They finish their appointment and their doctor sends their prescription over to WellPower for a refill. By the time they arrive at one of WellPower’s convenient pharmacy locations, their prescription is ready for pickup, and friendly staff have the time to talk with your friend about the questions they have about their medication.
Sounds made up? It’s not.
Take it from Becky, who experienced frustration with her previous pharmacy until she switched to WellPower.
”My experience with the WellPower pharmacy has always been pleasant and easy,” she said. “I changed my pharmacy due to constant delivery date changes from my previous pharmacy. Filling a prescription is always timely, notifications are accurate, and refilling by phone is convenient.”
Regina also knows that WellPower’s pharmacies are top notch.
“Excellent pharmacy,” she said. “Knowledgeable staff is always professional, courteous, helpful and compassionate. Wait times are minimal.”
You know what’s coming – scoreboard time.

Final Round: Pharmacy Reviews
In a world dominated by the internet and reviews driving consumer decisions, trusting what peers have to say can make all the difference in your choice of preferred pharmacy.
We looked at the data for other pharmacies near our two locations (Wellshire Pharmacy and WellPower Pharmacy on 12th) to see who has the best review averages. The results may shock you.
Both of our pharmacies have 5-star averages:
- WellPower Pharmacy on 12th: 5-star average
- Wellshire Pharmacy: 5-star average
Meanwhile, retail pharmacies in the area don’t rise above 4.5 stars – even dropping to below 2 stars.
Considering these ratings from real customers, it’s no surprise that the nonprofit model just works better for the community members we serve.
And remember, you don’t have to be in services with WellPower to use our pharmacies! We’re open to everyone, and that includes you.
Final Score:
WellPower: 4
Retail: 0
