Behavioral health leaders across Colorado agree: we are in the middle of change no one has seen before. Impending H.R. 1 funding cuts and work requirements. Billion-dollar budget shortfalls across state and local government. Elimination of once reliable grants. The picture is clear: we are navigating through a hurricane, and we have to adapt. And we are – WellPower is working through an organization-defining transformation.
What does this transformation look like at WellPower? Read on to find out.
Why change now?
“We acknowledge how hard change and transformation can be. At the same time, we cannot stay in one place with all the things changing around us,” said James Greer, WellPower’s president and CEO.
In the midst of all the challenges from funding and regulatory changes, the need for timely, effective behavioral health care continues to grow. And as artificial intelligence (A.I.) becomes more common across health care, organizations like ours must thoughtfully navigate new expectations around privacy, security, competition and competency in a rapidly evolving environment.
We are responding with intention – strengthening our organization so we can continue to meet people where they are, remove barriers to care and partner with individuals and families on the path to lasting well-being. That is why we are undergoing a significant transformation, reshaping how we operate, how we invest our limited resources and how we support our workforce. This work touches every part of WellPower, from access and intake to technology and data security to the day-to-day systems that help clinicians and care teams deliver high-quality services. Our goal is simple: to remain a reliable, person-centered partner for our community, today and for years to come.
Grounded in our mission and vision
Even in a shifting environment, our direction is clear. At the heart of this transformation is our refreshed mission: to empower people to overcome barriers and achieve lasting well-being through collaborative behavioral health care and comprehensive support. This mission reflects what our community asks for and deserves – care that is coordinated, accessible and built around each person’s strengths. It also moves us toward our vision of a community where every person’s mental health is fostered through strength, resilience and hope.
To bring that mission and vision to life in today’s reality, our transformation is built on two key pillars that reinforce one another.
Pillar 1: Financial stewardship
Financial stewardship means being responsive to changes in our environment and responsible with the resources entrusted to us so we can continue providing care to the people who need it most. As we look externally at adapting to funding realities, we are also looking inward: identifying efficiencies in workflows, streamlining operations and strengthening our financial foundation. When it takes less time, energy and resources to do our work, we can actually accomplish more with less. All of this will help us protect access to essential services during uncertain funding cycles, and they support the long-term sustainability that our community depends on.
We are making measurable progress in our ability to do more with less, all without compromising quality or access to care. That includes tightening administrative processes, aligning our spending with our highest-impact work and prioritizing investments that improve outcomes. In practice, sound financial stewardship is the discipline that allows WellPower to remain stable while continuing to grow and adapt alongside the people we serve.
Pillar 2: Operational efficiency and stronger systems
Operational efficiency is about making it easier for people to reach us, enter care and move through services without unnecessary delays or obstacles. We are improving front office and access operations to support a smoother experience from the first call and into ongoing engagement. At the same time, we are investing in a new approach to information technology infrastructure and data security – work that has become even more important as A.I. tools expand across health care. Strong systems help protect privacy, support staff and ensure we can respond quickly to changing requirements while continuing to deliver exceptional care.
“The greatest challenge and opportunity facing WellPower today is scaling our systems, operations and workforce to meet the evolving complexity of behavioral health needs across our community,” said Samuel Mitchell, WellPower’s vice president and chief operating officer.
These operational improvements are not about bureaucracy – they are about reliability. When our processes are clear and our systems are secure, our care teams can focus more fully on what matters: building trust, coordinating supports, providing exceptional clinical care and helping people make progress toward their goals.
Every change we undertake is guided by the principles that define who we are. We commit to providing person-centered care that honors each individual’s voice and choice; exceptional care grounded in quality and continuous improvement; and integrity in how we communicate, partner and steward resources. Underneath it all is organizational resilience – the ability to stay steady and responsive in the midst of a constantly shifting context.
Centering people through change
We also recognize that transformation can be difficult, and, at times, painful for people and programs that have contributed meaningfully to this work for years and even decades. We take this responsibility seriously. As we make decisions, we are committed to being thoughtful, thorough and person-centered, with particular care for the ways change can affect our staff. That includes clear communication, careful planning and a focus on maintaining a workplace where people feel supported as we navigate new realities together.
At WellPower, transformation isn’t just about surviving. It’s about thriving: innovating with purpose, strengthening partnerships and leading the way for behavioral health in Colorado for the coming decades. We are building the infrastructure, business processes and financial discipline needed to keep pace with change while staying true to our mission. Most importantly, we are doing this so that when someone in our community reaches out for help, WellPower can be there with compassionate, high-quality care and comprehensive support. We look forward to continuing to serve Denver and beyond for many years to come.
