It’s Flu Season: Time to Visit Your…Mental Health Center?

Key points to know:

  • WellPower offers flu shots as well as a full range of other immunizations, booster shots, and travel vaccines.
  • Our friendly nonprofit pharmacists prioritize people and take the time to talk with you about your questions and other health needs.
  • WellPower’s pharmacies help with insurance, possible drug interactions, and proactive refills to make sure you have an easy, seamless experience.

When flu season arrives, the familiar reminders begin: wash your hands, stay home when you are sick and make time for a flu shot. But where should you go for that vaccination? Your first thought may be a national drugstore chain or your primary care office. But one of Denver’s most convenient options may be less expected: a nonprofit community mental health center (spoiler: it’s your friends at WellPower).

WellPower operates two community pharmacies in Denver, and both are open to everyone, not only people receiving WellPower services. They provide flu shots and other immunizations, fill prescriptions for a wide range of medicines (not just mental health meds), carry common over-the-counter products, and offer personal guidance from pharmacists who actually have time to listen.

Where to get a flu shot in Denver?

WellPower pharmacies offer flu shots, as well as a full range of immunizations, booster shots, and travel vaccines like yellow fever. A pharmacist can help you understand which vaccinations are available and answer practical questions before you roll up your sleeve.

Getting a flu shot is often the quickest pharmacy visit you will make, but it is also an opportunity for a useful conversation. Instead of treating vaccination as a rushed errand, the pharmacy team offers a welcoming place to ask questions. That can make preventive care feel more approachable for anyone who has delayed a shot because of uncertainty, scheduling or the stress of navigating a crowded store.

Come for the flu shot, come back for the service

In contrast to large commercial chains, a good pharmacy does much more than place medication in a bag. WellPower pharmacists are medication experts who can help people understand what they are taking, how and when to take it, what side effects to watch for and how a new prescription may fit alongside existing medications. These conversations can be especially valuable for someone managing several prescriptions, a chronic condition, or a recent change in treatment.

WellPower’s pharmacies fill a wide range of prescriptions – not just psychiatric medications – and also stock everyday health products such as cough and cold remedies, allergy medications, and vitamins. The team offers consultations on health needs including diabetes management, smoking cessation, and other medication-related concerns.

At WellPower’s Wellshire Pharmacy, additional services include a full-service travel clinic, which can help you navigate confusing vaccination requirements and other health considerations for your upcoming trip.

How to refill a prescription

Running out of medication can disrupt much more than a routine. Missed doses can affect symptoms, sleep, work, relationships, and progress toward personal goals. Refill support is therefore a meaningful form of preventive care. WellPower’s pharmacy staff can help people anticipate refill timing, work through questions and insurance problems, and contact a prescriber when clarification is needed.

That support is particularly important when the health care system becomes complicated. A prescription may need authorization, a medication may be unavailable, or a copay may change unexpectedly. Rather than leaving a person to untangle the issue alone, WellPower pharmacy staff research options, look for discounts and coupons, communicate with the prescribing office to see if alternatives might be available, and help identify the next step. The goal is simple: reduce avoidable gaps and make it easier to stay on the treatment plan developed with a provider.

A pharmacy connected to the care around you

For people receiving care at WellPower, an on-site pharmacy adds another everyday benefit: closer coordination. Pharmacists can communicate with prescribers and other members of a person’s care team when questions arise. That can support more accurate medication lists, faster resolution of prescription concerns, and better follow-up after a treatment change.

Even if you receive care elsewhere, you can use a WellPower pharmacy. Prescribers can send new prescriptions electronically through standard pharmacy systems. For eligible non-controlled medications, a provider may also phone or fax a prescription. The pharmacy’s nonprofit, people-first approach is available to the broader Denver community, whether or not someone uses other WellPower programs.

This kind of coordination does not replace the relationship with your doctor, therapist, or other provider. It strengthens the network around you. When the pharmacist, prescriber, and person taking the medication can share clear information, small questions are less likely to grow into major barriers.

How to transfer your prescription

Switching pharmacies is as simple as a phone call:

  • Start by calling the WellPower pharmacy you would like to use (location and contact information below).
  • Have the name and phone number of your current pharmacy ready, along with the names of the prescriptions you want transferred.
  • A WellPower pharmacist will contact your current pharmacy, obtain the information needed, and complete transfers that are allowed by law.
  • Some medications have special transfer rules, so the team will explain if your prescriber needs to send a new prescription.

If you are starting a new medication, ask your provider to send the prescription directly to your preferred WellPower pharmacy. Before your current supply runs low, call to confirm that the prescription or transfer has arrived, ask when it will be ready, and share any insurance information the pharmacy needs. A short conversation up front can prevent a last-minute gap.
