Welcome to May is Mental Health Month

by Carl Clark, M.D.

Welcome to May is Mental Health Month. Since every single person has mental health, I hope this is a month we all can appreciate. After all, mental health is a continuum and can fluctuate based on internal and external factors. Science has shown there are many research backed methods to improve our well-being. Interestingly, one of the most effective ways to impact the well-being of those around you, is to improve your own personal well-being. We are incredibly inner-connected when it comes to improving the health of our community.

That’s why this May, I want to share how I was able to significantly improve my well-being and offer you tips and tools on how you too, can boost your mental health and live a more meaningful life. Some of what we’ll share seems too easy – more sleep? That’s it? – while others may require more intention. Follow along on social media all month long as we explore well-being and its ripple effect on the community.

A few great ways to jump-start your journey? This month, we’re encouraging people to take a free online course called the Science of Well-Being from Yale professor Laurie Santos. There is so much science-backed research on how we can live happier, more fulfilling lives and this course will share those insights as well as offer strategies to help you improve your own well-being. I took it and now recommend it to everyone. It’s easy – not a huge time commitment – and had a profound impact on me.

I also encourage people to take advantage of the Free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainings we’re offering in May. Just as CPR can help someone having a physical crisis like a heart attack, MHFA offers guidance on how to help someone in a mental or substance use disorder crisis.

Thanks for being a part of the WellPower’s community. We hope the information we share for May is Mental Health Month inspires you to take steps to improve your own well-being and improves your understanding of how strong mental health improves our community.

Thanks,

Carl Clark M.D.
