About Well-Being Resources

As the National Center of Excellence in Behavioral Health Care, our goal is to provide you with a wealth of resources about well-being.

Mental Health First Aid is an interactive 8-hour course that presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. Those who take the 8-hour course to certify as Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

The Science of Well-Being online course, offered by Yale for free on Coursera and taught by Professor Laurie Santos, reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. You will ultimately be prepared to successfully incorporate a specific wellness activity into your life.

The science of Positive Psychology tells us that the well-being of the people around us affects us, too. If we have friends who have positive well-being, that impacts our well-being by 15%. If they have friends with positive well-being, that impacts us by 6%, even if we don't know them, personally.

The PERMA Model stands for: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Positive Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment. The theory behind it is that we should not just aim for people to be happy, but for them to flourish. Our efforts in caring for the people in our communities need to go to all aspects of their well-being, so they have the opportunity to thrive.
