Introducing The Downstairs – a program for young adults

The average age of onset of most mental health disorders is 18-24 years old. Sadly, this age group is also one of the most underserved populations. Young adults experiencing mental illness for the first time need more resources, more support, and more peer groups.

The WellPower has recognized this need, and has recently launched its new young adult program, The Downstairs.

On Thursday, February 20th, 2014, The Downstairs officially opened its doors to consumers between the ages of 16 to 24 years old.

The weekly program is held every Thursday night from 4pm to 7pm at NextChapter (456 Bannock Street).

In the coming months, The Downstairs will feature a wide range of activities  specifically tailored to a young adult audience–including art therapy projects, financial aid 101, and assertiveness training.

The Downstairs is a space for young adults to create a community of peers with shared experiences. A safe environment, where one can learn to break the stigma surrounding mental health and prove to the community and themselves that they are not defined by illness.

One member describes The Downstairs as, “very educational and very helpful–it’s a good resource.”
